Књига о Јову

Човјек рођен од жене кратка је вијека и пун немира.

Man [that is] born of a woman [is] of few days, and full of trouble.

Као цвијет ниче, и одсијеца се, и бјежи као сјен, и не остаје.

He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.

И на такога отвораш око своје, и мене водиш на суд са собом!

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?

Who can bring a clean [thing] out of an unclean? not one.

Измјерени су дани његови, број мјесеца његовијех у тебе је; поставио си му међу, преко које не може пријећи.

Seeing his days [are] determined, the number of his months [are] with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;

Одврати се од њега да почине докле не наврши као надничар дан свој.

Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.

Јер за дрво има надања, ако се посијече, да ће се још омладити и да неће бити без изданака;

For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.

Ако и остари у земљи коријен његов и у праху изумре пањ његов,

Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;

Чим осјети воду, опет напупи и пусти гране као присад.

[Yet] through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.

А човјек умире изнемогао; и кад издахне човјек, гдје је?

But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where [is] he?

Као кад вода отече из језера и ријека опадне и усахне,

[As] the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

Тако човјек кад легне, не устаје више; докле је небеса неће се пробудити нити ће се пренути ода сна својега.

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens [be] no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

О да ме хоћеш у гробу сакрити и склонити ме докле не утоли гњев твој, и да ми даш рок кад ћеш ме се опоменути!

O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

Кад умрије човјек, хоће ли оживјети? Све дане времена које ми је одређено чекаћу докле ми дође промјена.

If a man die, shall he live [again]? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.

Зазваћеш, и ја ћу ти се одазвати; дјело руку својих пожељећеш.

Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

А сада бројиш кораке моје, и ништа не остављаш за гријех мој.

For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?

Запечаћени су у тобоцу моји пријеступи, и завезујеш безакоња моја.

My transgression [is] sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.

Заиста, као што гора падне и распадне се, и као што се стијена одвали с мјеста својега,

And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.

И као што вода спира камење и поводањ односи прах земаљски, тако надање човјечије обраћаш у ништа.

The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow [out] of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.

Надвлађујеш га једнако, те одлази, мијењаш му лице и отпушташ га.

Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.

Ако синови његови буду у части, он не зна; ако ли у срамоти, он се не брине.

His sons come to honour, and he knoweth [it] not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth [it] not of them.

Само тијело док је жив болује, и душа његова у њему тужи.

But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
