Прва књига Самуилова (која се зове и Прва књига о царевима )

А Давид отишавши оданде стаде на тврдијем мјестима Енгадским.

And David went up from thence, and dwelt in strong holds at Engedi.

И кад се Саул врати одагнавши Филистеје, рекоше му говорећи: ено Давида у пустињи Енгадској.

And it came to pass, when Saul was returned from following the Philistines, that it was told him, saying, Behold, David [is] in the wilderness of Engedi.

Тада узе Саул три тисуће људи изабранијех из свега Израиља, и отиде да тражи Давида и људе његове по врлетима гдје су дивокозе.

Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel, and went to seek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild goats.

И дође к торовима овчијим украј пута гдје бијаше пећина; и Саул уђе у њу рад себе; а Давид и његови људи сјеђаху у крају у пећини.

And he came to the sheepcotes by the way, where [was] a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the sides of the cave.

И рекоше Давиду људи његови: ево дана, за који ти рече Господ: ево ја ти предајем непријатеља твојега у руке да учиниш с њим што ти је воља. И Давид уста, те полако отсијече скут од плашта Саулова.

And the men of David said unto him, Behold the day of which the LORD said unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayest do to him as it shall seem good unto thee. Then David arose, and cut off the skirt of Saul's robe privily.

А послије задрхта срце Давиду што отсијече скут Саулу.

And it came to pass afterward, that David's heart smote him, because he had cut off Saul's skirt.

И рече својим људима: не дао Бог да то учиним господару својему, помазанику Господњему, да подигнем руку своју на њ. Јер је помазаник Господњи.

And he said unto his men, The LORD forbid that I should do this thing unto my master, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch forth mine hand against him, seeing he [is] the anointed of the LORD.

И одврати ријечима Давид људе своје и не даде им да устану на Саула. И Саул изашав из пећине пође својим путем.

So David stayed his servants with these words, and suffered them not to rise against Saul. But Saul rose up out of the cave, and went on [his] way.

Потом Давид уста, и изашав из пећине стаде викати за Саулом говорећи: царе господине! А Саул се обазре, а Давид се сави лицем до земље и поклони се.

David also arose afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, saying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David stooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himself.

И рече Давид Саулу: зашто слушаш што ти кажу људи који говоре: ето Давид тражи зло твоје?

And David said to Saul, Wherefore hearest thou men's words, saying, Behold, David seeketh thy hurt?

Ево, данас видјеше очи твоје да те је Господ био предао данас у моје руке у овој пећини, и рекоше ми да те убијем: али те поштедјех, и рекох: нећу дигнути руке своје на господара својега, јер је помазаник Господњи.

Behold, this day thine eyes have seen how that the LORD had delivered thee to day into mine hand in the cave: and [some] bade [me] kill thee: but [mine eye] spared thee; and I said, I will not put forth mine hand against my lord; for he [is] the LORD'S anointed.

Moreover, my father, see, yea, see the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the skirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and see that [there is] neither evil nor transgression in mine hand, and I have not sinned against thee; yet thou huntest my soul to take it.

Господ нека суди између мене и тебе, и нека ме освети од тебе; али рука се моја неће подигнути на те.

The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

Како каже стара прича: од безбожнијех излази безбожност; зато се рука моја неће подигнути на те.

As saith the proverb of the ancients, Wickedness proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand shall not be upon thee.

За ким је изашао цар Израиљев? кога гониш? мртва пса, буху једну.

After whom is the king of Israel come out? after whom dost thou pursue? after a dead dog, after a flea.

Господ нека буде судија, и нека расуди између мене и тебе; он нека види и расправи моју парницу и избави ме из руке твоје.

The LORD therefore be judge, and judge between me and thee, and see, and plead my cause, and deliver me out of thine hand.

А кад изговори Давид ове ријечи Саулу, рече Саул: је ли то твој глас, сине Давиде? И подигавши Саул глас свој заплака.

And it came to pass, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul said, [Is] this thy voice, my son David? And Saul lifted up his voice, and wept.

И рече Давиду: правији си од мене, јер си ми вратио добро за зло које сам ја теби учинио.

And he said to David, Thou [art] more righteous than I: for thou hast rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.

И данас си ми показао да ми добро чиниш; јер ме Господ даде теби у руке, а ти ме опет не уби.

And thou hast shewed this day how that thou hast dealt well with me: forasmuch as when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedst me not.

И ко би нашавши непријатеља својега пустио га да иде добријем путем? Господ нека ти врати добро за ово што си ми учинио данас.

For if a man find his enemy, will he let him go well away? wherefore the LORD reward thee good for that thou hast done unto me this day.

И сада, ево, знам да ћеш зацијело бити цар, и јако ће бити у твојој руци царство Израиљево.

And now, behold, I know well that thou shalt surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in thine hand.

Зато ми се сада закуни Господом да нећеш истријебити сјемена мојега послије мене, ни имена мојега затрти у дому оца мојега.

Swear now therefore unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my seed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my father's house.

И закле се Давид Саулу; и Саул отиде кући својој, а Давид и људи његови отидоше на тврдо мјесто.

And David sware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.
